NFL selects Santa Clara for Super Bowl 50, Houston for Super Bowl 51

Santa Clara will be hosting Super Bowl L in its shiny new stadium, while Houston has been awarded Super Bowl LI.

Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE

The NFL awarded Super Bowl 50 in 2016 to the city of Santa Clara at a league owner’s meeting Tuesday in Boston. In an additional announcement, the city of Houston has won the bid to host Super Bowl 51 in 2017.

The San Francisco Bay Area has hosted just one Super Bowl before, in 1985 at Stanford Stadium. With a worn down Candlestick Park, the city has been unable to win any additional bids until now, thanks to the brand new Levi’s Stadium 45 miles south of the city. The stadium will start hosting the San Francisco 49ers in 2014.

This will be Houston's third time hosting the big game. They previously held it in 1974 at Rice Stadium, and again in 2004 at the new Reliant Stadium. This is their second Super Bowl bid as the reborn Houston Texans.

Miami’s Sun Life Stadium was the other finalist considered for SB50. They were once considered the front-runner, but a failed attempt to secure renovation funds for the aging stadium sank their bid.
