Geno Smith signs with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation

The rookie will take on New York with a local icon. What does this mean for the future of Geno and for Roc Nation?

USA TODAY Sports

Geno Smith's search for an agent is Hova.

Last week it was reported that the Jets rookie quarterback was interested in signing with Roc Nation, the agency owned by rapper Jay-Z. That became official on Wednesday as Manish Mehta of the New York Daily news reported that Smith has signed with Roc Nation and will have be under the same umbrella as other New York figures including Robinson Cano of the Yankees and Victor Cruz of the Giants.

Smith fired his agents after his draft slide out of the first round following rumors he could be the number one overall pick. He eventually landed with the Jets at No. 39 overall, but his disappointment made him a free agent for agents. Jay-Z and Roc Nation were rumored early on to be among five agencies vying for his services in the biggest market in the country, and now they’ve officially signed the next potential star in New York.

The rookie out of West Virginia is now in a competition against incumbent Mark Sanchez, free-agent signee Matt Simms and holdover Greg McElroy for positioning on the depth chart for the 2013 season. Veteran David Garrard, who also signed with the Jets during the offseason, was thought to be in contention for the top job until he chose to retire last week due to a nagging knee injury.

At the end of the day, New York is the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, but will big lights inspire Geno and make him feel brand new? He’s got a new agent to help lead the way.
