Elvis Dumervil assuming leadership role, says Ravens coach John Harbaugh

One of the newest Ravens is making a big impact in the land of crab cakes.

Despite only being on the team for a few months and only having taken part in a few OTA practices thus far, new Baltimore Ravens defensive end/linebacker Elvis Dumervil is establishing himself as a leader on the team.

Head coach John Harbaugh has praised Dumervil for being dependable and someone he always admired when he played for the Denver Broncos. Now that Dumervil is on the Ravens, Harbaugh appreciated what Dumervil brings to the table even more, according to the Carroll County Times.

"It seems like Elvis has made the transition," Harbaugh said after the Ravens’ OTA practice Wednesday. "He has been here every day. He hasn’t missed one thing since he’s been here. I feel like he’s emerging as a leader for our football team. He has had no problem learning the defense. ...

"He’s done a great job. He’s a smart player. He likes football. He’s done a good job at it, so he’s done a good job."

Dumervil came to Baltimore after one of the weirder scenarios in free agent history. Dumervil was ready to take a pay cut from the Broncos but his agent didn’t fax over the paperwork in time, missing the deadline by a matter of minutes.

The mistake cost Dumervil a contract in Denver, and Baltimore pounced on the opportunity. The defensive standout couldn’t be happier with his current situation, per the article:

"I’ve come to a first-class organization [from] the owner, down," Dumervil said. "Head coach, [general manager and executive vice president] Ozzie [Newsome] and those guys really demonstrate the way they want things to be done. And coming in, obviously, the reputation with Ray Lewis, Ed [Reed], those guys – it’s kind of [like] the picture is there of what you need to do, and I just try to come in and do what I need to do to win."
