Julian Edelman contract: Patriots, WR tweak deal to include roster bonus

The Patriots and the wide receiver have adjusted a bonus in his new contract, giving the team a little more protection if his foot doesn’t heal properly.

The Patriots and wide receiver Julian Edelman have reworked a minor portion of his new contract with the team, according to the Boston Globe. Edelman was in line to receive a $50,000 workout bonus, but now $40,000 of that bonus has been converted to a roster bonus that vests during the first week of the season.

The change was made to reflect Edelman’s injury history. He reinjured his right foot and has been a limited participant in the team’s offseason program. He has yet to get on the field for any of the team’s OTAs. In his first four seasons, Edelman has missed 16 out of 64 regular season games, a good quarter of his career.

The Patriots could really use a healthy year from Edelman in 2013. The team bid adieu to Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd, but did re-sign Edelman to a one-year deal, meaning he is the longest tenured regular contributor in their wide receiving corps. They did add Danny Amendola, Donald Jones and Michael Jenkins in free agency.
