Hakeem Nicks contract: Giants WR in no hurry for new deal

Unlike his teammate Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks isn’t pushing for a contract extension. He’s reportedly willing to wait until after the season to discuss a new deal.

Hakeem Nicks is entering the final year of his contract, but the New York Giants wide receiver isn't pushing for an extension this offseason, according to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Nicks is willing to wait until after the 2013 season to engage in contract extension talks, per the report. While many players push for the security of a long-term contract before they hit the open market, Nicks could benefit from waiting until the end of next season. Nicks battled injuries last season and was limited to 53 receptions for a career-low 692 yards. Despite considerable success earlier in his career, Nicks has less leverage now, coming off a less-than-stellar season.

At 25, Nicks is only entering the prime of his career and could command a huge contract on the open market next season if he proves he's over his injury issues. As Mike Wallace proved this offseason, teams will pay a hefty price for young, productive wide receivers. Nicks' decision to wait on an extension will likely give him more power in future negotiations, according to two general managers who spoke to Rapoport.

Nicks may also be waiting for an extension to see how Victor Cruz's contract situation plays out. Cruz, who is also scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, is currently engaged in contract negotiations with the Giants.
