JaMarcus Russell sheds 50 pounds in NFL comeback attempt

Russell’s offseason workout appears to be going well. Will any NFL team give him a second chance?

Ezra Shaw

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell continues his NFL comeback attempt, and he appears to be making progress. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports that Russell is down to 265 pounds, close to his playing weight coming out of LSU.

Russell started his comeback attempt in January, and he reportedly weighed 315 pounds at the time. He's been working out with Jeff Garcia to refine his passing skill set and hopes to find an NFL team in time for training camp.

It’s a good sign of progress for Russell after teams wanted him to lose more weight in April, and he seems dedicated and serious about his attempt to get back in the NFL. That said, teams are still skeptical about his chances after he flamed out in spectacular fashion with the Raiders. As a quarterback, Russell had a lot more problems than weight, and it’s doubtful if losing 50 pounds will fix his throwing mechanics or pocket presence. We’ll see if anyone gives him a shot in a couple months.
