Kenny Phillips injury: Eagles DB sits out practice to rest surgically-repaired knee

Eagles safety Kenny Phillips missed practice on Tuesday as he continues to work his way back from multiple knee injuries.

Kenny Phillips missed Eagles practice on Tuesday due to a knee injury he suffered in 2009. Phillips said missing practice was purely precautionary, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Phillips suffered a major knee injury during the 2009 season and was forced to undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee. He returned the following season and started 31 games in 2010 and 2011, but knee injuries limited Phillips again in 2012. He suffered a strained MCL in his right knee, then later suffered a setback during his recovery. He wound up playing in just seven games.

Now, Phillips is taking a cautious approach during offseason workouts. According to McLane, Phillips said he sat out on Tuesday as a precaution while he continues to work to strengthen his left knee. It shouldn’t be surprise that Phillips is taking a cautious approach after he voiced displeasure over his rehab plan last season.

“When we started our rehab we didn’t go about it the right way, and now here we are, we’re dealing with it right now,” Phillips said in November, via the New York Daily News. “I don’t want to get into (specifics). It just didn’t work out the way we wanted it to.”

While Phillips is taking it slow, his absence is still less than ideal. The Eagles remade their secondary this offseason with Phillips among the free-agent signings. He’s expected to compete for a starting job, but that competition could be derailed if his knee issues persist into training camp.
