New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes has no plans to show up to offseason training activities which aren't mandatory, according to Boston.com.

The linebacker out of Florida isn’t planning on coming to anything that isn’t mandatory.

There has been all sorts of conjecture as to why Spikes isn’t coming into OTAs, with much of the thought being that Spikes isn’t happy with his contract. Currently, Spikes is on the last year of his rookie deal which pays him $630,000 this year.
However, it’s unclear whether Spikes has an issue with his contract or simply marches to the beat of his own drum.
Spikes says he will be there once mandatory camp starts in a few weeks, but until then, Spikes will be doing his own thing to stay in football shape.
Certainly, Spikes isn’t helping himself get another contract in New England, but it’s ultimately his choice whether he wants to attend OTAs, as pointed out by Pats Pulpit.
Nonetheless, the team can’t be all too thrilled that Spikes is skipping activities that just about every other player will be attending. It’s one thing to skip workouts – plenty of players do that. But the majority of players that choose to work out on their own choose to fly into town for OTA’s. As we know, Patriots coach Bill Belichick considers this time of the year a critical part of the team building process. When you’re not there to be a part of that team building process, it is somewhat noteworthy.
In 2012, Spikes had the best season of his three-year career, making 92 tackles and forcing five fumbles to help New England to another AFC East title.
