Rob Gronkowsi injury: Patriots TE reportedly needs back surgery

It’s another surgery, but this time it’s for a different part of his body. Will this latest news cause a setback in Gronkowski’s recovery time?

Rich Schultz

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is currently recovering from multiple surgeries to repair a broken forearm, but reports recently surfaced that he may also need surgery on his back to correct a disc issue. Albert Breer reports on Wednesday that sources say that Gronkowski will indeed need the surgery and that it is tentatively scheduled for mid-June.

Gronkowski previously missed his senior season at Arizona after surgery to repair a disc in his back, but this current procedure is currently going to overlap with the recovery time of his fourth arm surgery that was expected to keep him out for a minimum of two months. Gronkowski could still return before the end of training camp, though no certain timetable has been set.

After a record-breaking season that saw him catch 90 passes for 1,327 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2011, Gronkowski's career has been stalled since breaking his forearm in Week 11 against the Colts. That forced Gronkowski to miss five games, but he was able to return in time for the Patriots playoff run. He re-injured the arm in New England's first playoff game, though, and has since had three more operations on the arm to clear out an infection and to replace some hardware.

He has reportedly been dealing with the back issue for over a year and this might just be his best opportunity to correct the issue while he’s already unable to practice. Whether he will be back in time for training camp or the preseason remains to be seen.
