Ed Reed injury: Texans S had hip surgery, expected to be ready for training camp

Ed Reed, perhaps the Houston Texans’ biggest offseason acquisition, is dealing with an injured hip.

USA TODAY Sports

Houston Texans safety Ed Reed, who signed a three-year contract with the Houston Texans in late March, had arthroscopic surgery last week to repair a labral tear in his hip, according to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain. Reed expects to be ready for a return by the start of training camp.

Reed, an 11-year veteran out of Miami, has stayed relatively healthy over the course of his career, playing in 16 regular-season games in eight seasons, including the last two. He played in every game last season, despite revealing in mid-October that he had a torn labrum in his shoulder.

The last major injury blow to Reed came in 2010, when he missed the first six games of the season due to offseason hip surgery. That’s probably not too comforting for Texans coaches and fans.

At 34, Reed isn't getting any younger. Still, he was solid in the Ravens' secondary last year. Reed finished the regular season with 58 tackles, 15 pass breakups and four interceptions. During Baltimore's run to the Super Bowl in the playoffs, he added 15 tackles, three breakups and one pick.
