Broncos RB Willis McGahee has not attended OTAs

The veteran running back might be fighting for a roster spot this time around, but that’s not keeping him from sitting out of OTAs so far. Can McGahee still produce at age 32?

US PRESSWIRE

Denver Broncos running back Willis McGahee has managed to stay relatively healthy during his NFL career, but a torn MCL in Week 11 of last season forced him out of the final six regular-season games and playoffs. Perhaps for that reason, and perhaps for the fact that McGahee turns 32 in October, Denver's lead back has not shown up for OTAs yet, according to USA Today's Lindsay Jones.

Broncos blog Mile High Report: Broncos OTAs update

McGahee has skipped OTAs in the past and isn't necessarily holding out for any reason or going against his regular behavior. The knee injury suffered last year forced him to miss the most games in one season than he has since 2003, when the Bills drafted him knowing that he would likely miss all of his rookie year. Since then, he hadn't missed more than three games in any one season, and after splitting time in the Ravens' backfield for most of 2008 to 2010, McGahee had a career resurgence with Denver in 2011.

McGahee rushed for 1,199 yards in 15 games that year, with 4.8 yards per carry. He was playing well again last season before the knee injury, totaling 952 yards from scrimmage in 10 games. But now the 31-year-old veteran will be fighting off Knowshon Moreno, Lance Ball, Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman not only for position on the depth chart, but perhaps a roster spot altogether.

For now he’s taking his time in getting into that competition and staking his claim.
