Branden Albert, Chiefs want contract extension, per report

After an offseason of rumors, could Branden Albert wind up staying in Kansas City on a long-term deal?

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Branden Albert has had an eventful offseason, but despite it all he is likely headed back to Kansas City for the 2013 season. Both Albert and the Chiefs would like to work out a contract extension, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Chiefs used the franchise tag to keep Albert off the unrestricted free agent market, then spent most of the offseason shopping him on the trade market. Miami was thought to be a potential destination and the Dolphins were reportedly willing to meet Albert's contract demands. The Chiefs and Dolphins, however, were unable to agree to a deal prior to the NFL Draft. Kansas City was reportedly willing to accept a 2014 second-round draft pick, the but Dolphins recently signed tackle Tyson Clabo.

With Miami out of the picture and no other obvious suitor, Albert is likely to be a Chief for at least another season. He could play the 2013 season under the franchise tag before going through the entire process again next season, or he and the Chiefs could work out a long-term deal. Kansas City drafted Eric Fisher with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, but Fisher could play right tackle if Albert signs an extension.

Whatever happens with Albert’s contract situation, he has apparently realized he will be in Kansas City for at least the near future. He posted a photograph on Instagram, complete with song lyrics about coming home and the hastags #ChiefNation and #kcchiefs.
