Even after releasing Tim Tebow, the New York Jets may still have the most unsettled quarterback situation in the NFL. Mark Sanchez and his bloated contract are still on the roster as are David Garrard and recent second-round pick Geno Smith. While not many would use the word "fun" when describing New York's current quarterback situation, Jets owner Woody Johnson did just that.

The Jets’ quarterback situation is still a mess, but New York owner Woody Johnson said it’s going to be a “fun” competition.

Johnson was asked about Smith, Sanchez and the quarterback situation at the NFL’s Career Development Symposium on Tuesday. He praised Smith for his talent and intangibles, saying New York would have selected Smith in the first round had it traded back to the No. 13 pick. Instead the Jets chose the former West Virginia quarterback with the No. 39 pick. While he hesitated from labeling Smith as a franchise quarterback, Johnson praised the selection and said he was looking forward to the upcoming quarterback competition.
“I’m extremely happy to have him,” Johnson said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN New York. “He’s welcome to the competition. It’s going to be fun.”
Sanchez figures to be part of the competition, despite struggling mightily last season. There were reports that the Jets may consider releasing Sanchez, but Johnson said he expects him to remain on the roster. Garrard will also compete for the starting job with Johnson stopping short of naming a favorite.
“I’ll let the competition go,” Johnson said. “We’ll just see how it goes. I don’t want to prejudge it because they’ve got to go in there and compete every game. We’ll see when they step on the field.”
The Jets quarterback situation may be better than it was a month ago, but that doesn’t mean New York’s problem is solved. Whichever quarterback wins the starting job could perform better than Sanchez did last season, but New York is still in the middle of a massive rebuilding project. The days of Rex Ryan guaranteeing Super Bowls are over as now Johnson is preaching patience.
“Be patient and trust that we’re doing the right thing for your team. ... It’s going to take ... you have to have a little bit of faith. Watch.”
