Cowboys want Doug Free to take big pay cut

The Cowboys want their left tackle to take a serious reduction in salary to help alleviate some of their financial burdens this year.

The Dallas Cowboys are hoping to force left tackle Doug Free into taking a major pay cut, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Dallas is cap-strapped after paying Tony Romo $480 million (well, not really, but it's $40 million guaranteed, the highest total in the history of the franchise). The Cowboys also have a great deal of money invested in Miles Austin. $54 million is a lot of money for a player who isn't even the best at his position on the team.

Free is currently set to make $8 million this season as part of his four-year, $32 million deal. This figure is astronomical considering Free is a marginal tackle at best. In 2012, the Cowboys line was once again a complete disaster, causing Romo to run for his life more often than not.

If the Cowboys can’t get Free to move his cap number down, he might get axed. It’s certainly plausible that Jerry Jones and Co. could go in another direction considering the risk wouldn’t be all that great.

Overall, Dallas allowed 34 sacks and numerous pressures. The Cowboys also struggled to run the football, leading them to draft center Travis Frederick in the first round.
