Santonio Holmes supports Mark Sanchez as Jets’ starting QB

The Jets could have a five-way competition for the starting quarterback job next season, but at least one player has made up his mind. Can Sanchez live up to Holmes wishes?

Many people have speculated that the Mark Sanchez era in New York was all but over after Sanchez was benched at the end of the 2012 season and then the Jets drafted Geno Smith and signed David Garrard. However, not everyone is so quick to demote the former face of the franchise. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes told the NBC Sports Network on Wednesday that he fully supports Sanchez as the starter and team leader for the Jets (via the NY Daily News).

“Right now he’s going to continue being Mark Sanchez, the team leader. (He’s) just focused on helping the team.”

In addition to being in a competition with Garrard and Smith, Sanchez will also have to fight off Greg McElroy and Matt Simms for the starter's position, but head coach Rex Ryan was adamant that Sanchez has the first shot. He previously seemed to squander away his opportunity to be the long-term solution in New York when he completed just 54.3 percent of his passes in 2012 with 13 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

McElroy started the season finale in his place. Who will start the season opener has yet to be determined, but Holmes would be fine if it was Sanchez.
