Jon Bostic agrees to 4-year contract with Bears

The heir apparent to Brian Urlacher is signed and ready to kick off the next generation at linebacker for Chicago. What can be expected during his rookie year?

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears parted ways with veteran linebacker Brian Urlacher after 13 seasons together when they decided not to give him a new contract. They did however reach a four-year contract agreement with second-round pick Jon Bostic on Thursday, possibly solidifying themselves at middle linebacker for the next 13 years if everything goes right again.

Bostic, a linebacker out of the University of Florida, is expected to compete with D.J. Williams at inside linebacker and possibly James Anderson at strongside. The Bears are looking to replace eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher in the middle and opted for Bostic in the second round as the first candidate to be the next franchise player in the center of the defense.

A second-team All-SEC player following his senior season, Bostic recorded 237 tackles and 7.5 sacks during his career with the Gators. None of which could compare to the task of having to replace one of the best players in Bears history.
