Kroy Biermann playing some outside linebacker in Falcons defense

The Falcons are adding more 3-4 defense wrinkles to the playbook, giving Kroy Biermann more snaps at outside linebacker.

USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan could be adding more 3-4 scheme looks to the defense, according to Fox Sports South. As a result, defensive lineman Kroy Biermann may play more snaps at outside linebacker.

Last season, Biermann was a versatile player for Atlanta, playing at left defensive end, special teams and serving as a "rover," covering deep passes down the middle. Biermann was drafted at 240 pounds and later bulked up to 260, but he could be pushed to linebacker after the Falcons drafted two traditional defensive ends and signed Osi Umenyiora.

The Falcons could also make the change due to being thin at linebacker. Sean Weatherspoon and Stephen Nicholas are both missing OTAs after offseason surgeries.

Neither Biermann nor Nolan have confirmed a position change, though the veteran seems open to the idea.

“I’m just happy to be out here,” Biermann said. “It’s good to be flying around again. Like I said, coach Nolan’s playbook has some depth to it. I don’t think I’ve even seen half of it. He’s going to start opening it up, I think. Wherever they put me, I’ll play and I’m going to play it to the best of my abilities.”

Biermann has played in every game of his five-year career. He recorded 52 tackles and four sacks last season.
