Baltimore Ravens release fullback Vonta Leach

The Ravens couldn’t find a trade partner for Vonta Leach and chose to release the 31-year-old fullback.

USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Ravens have released fullback Vonta Leach, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. This move comes after the team was unable to find a trade partner for the veteran.

Leach spent the last two seasons with Baltimore after a five-year stint with the Houston Texans. He made a name for himself as Ray Rice's lead blocker, but was phased out of the offense late in 2012 when Jim Caldwell replaced Cam Cameron as offensive coordinator. Complicating matters further was his age (he turns 32 in November) and his $4.33 million cap hit for the 2013 season.

The Ravens tried to work out a contract restructuring with Leach, but they couldn’t get any kind of deal done, prompting the team to look to trade him before 12 p.m. ET on Tuesday. When no trade suitors emerged before the deadline, the Ravens pulled the trigger.

Fourth-round draft pick Kyle Juszczyk is now the favorite to win the starting fullback job in Baltimore.
