Packers to release Desmond Bishop, per report

The Packers are reportedly set to part ways with Desmond Bishop if they can’t work out a contract restructure or trade.

The Green Bay Packers may be parting ways with linebacker Desmond Bishop if they can't work out a restructure or trade, according to Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin.

Bishop was drafted by the Packers in the sixth round in 2007. He became a starter in 2010 and quickly established as one of the better linebackers in the league, with 218 tackles, eight sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles between 2010 and 2011.

Unfortunately, Bishop’s 2012 season was a complete wash; he tore his hamstring in preseason and missed the entire season. He’s been limited in minicamps but is expected to be ready in time for training camp.

Bishop signed a four-year, $19.05 million extension after his breakout 2010 season, but the notoriously frugal Packers are already trying to get out from under that. They tried to shop him during the draft and now seem intent to let him go if he won’t agree to a restructured deal. He is currently set to make $3.464 million in 2013.
