Jason Garrett addresses Cowboys’ playcalling drama

Garrett will stay involved in the game planning but doesn’t have a problem letting someone else call the plays.

There has been much ink spilled over the past week about Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett no longer calling the plays for his team, with those duties now falling to offensive coordinator Bill Callahan.

According to the Star-Telegram, this isn’t going to be an issue going forward for Garrett and his team. Per the article:

“We’ve been working really since the end of January with that in mind, and what that in mind is Bill Callahan has been the acting offensive coordinator, and he’s going to take on the full responsibilities of calling the plays,” Garrett said Tuesday, the first day of the team’s minicamp. “We made that decision months ago”

In the two full seasons Garrett has coached the team, he has been under fire from media and fans alike for throwing the ball too often and forgetting the running game. Often, this has led to quarterback Tony Romo taking some big hits with defenses pinning their ears back and bringing heavy blitzes.

In both of Garrett’s campaigns running the ship, Dallas has finished 8-8 despite having the talent to perhaps contend for a playoff spot and a postseason win or two.

Callahan is a former head coach who last ran his own team at the University of Nebraska before being dismissed in 2007 after four seasons. He also coached the Oakland Raiders from 2002-2003, highlighted by a Super Bowl appearance his first season.
