Kellen Winslow tries to earn spot at Jets minicamp

New York is hoping to find a playmaker on the cheap in Winslow.

J. Meric

At this point in his career, 29-year-old Kellen Winslow is simply thinking about the survival of his career.

Once thought of as a terrific prospect coming out of the University of Miami, the son of a Hall-of-Fame tight end whom he's named after has signed on with the New York Jets in hopes of one more chance, according to the New York Daily News.

Winslow has bounced around the NFL since he was the No. 6 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2004. After playing only two games over his first two years due to injury, Winslow had two monster years of 89 and 82 receptions, including his lone 1,000-yard receiving season in 2007.

Following one more campaign in Cleveland, Winslow signed a then-record deal for a tight end of six years and $36 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Tampa, Winslow recorded 77-, 66- and 75-catch seasons before being jettisoned.

Last year, Winslow caught on with the New England Patriots but only played in one game.

The Jets could certainly use some offensive ability with Dustin Keller having left for the Miami Dolphins via free agency. New York only has one legitimate receiving threat in wide receiver Santonio Holmes, with the rest of the offense featuring very unproven players such as Stephen Hill.
