Mike Kafka has good opportunity to be Jaguars’ starting QB, GM Dave Caldwell says

Kafka was released by New England and now finds himself smack-dab in the middle of a quarterback competition in Jacksonville.

Mike Kafka was a casualty in the Tim Tebow-New England Patriots storm this week, but the Jacksonville Jaguars brought him in and general manager Dave Caldwell says he will be able to push for the team's starting quarterback job, according to a report from Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com on Thursday.

In Kuharsky's report, Caldwell said that Kafka, released by New England, has "just as good an opportunity" to be the Jaguars' starting signal-caller in 2013. He'll be competing primarily against Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne, as well as rookies Matt Scott and Jordan Rodgers. So Caldwell is probably right.

Jacksonville is embracing an overall up-for-grabs theme this offseason, as they work to determine who will step up and claim starting roles in 2013. They finished 2-14 in 2012.

Kafka was taken in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He last played in the regular season for them in 2011, filling in for an injured Michael Vick, primarily in games against the Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants. In those contests, Kafka completed 11-of-16 throws for 107 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Those remain his career totals.

The Jaguars averaged 213.7 passing yards per game last season, which ranked 21st in the league. Henne led the team with 2,084 yards through the air and 11 touchdown tosses.
