Sean Lee contract: Cowboys will likely explore extension with LB

One of Dallas’s top defenders is due for a new contract after this season.

Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee has a year left on his current deal, and team executive vice president Stephen Jones said the organization will likely begin looking for ways to extend his contract, according to a report from Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News on Thursday.

Jones gave a pretty boilerplate teaser for future contract negotiations in the report:

“Historically, we look at guys going into the last years of their contracts. Sean is going into the last year of his contract, so that’s probably something we’ll look at.”

Lee suffered a season-ending toe injury in Week 7 last season, but has been one of the Cowboy’s best defensive players since being drafted in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Lee’s breakout season came in 2011, as he registered 105 combined tackles, seven passes defensed and four interceptions. Through six games last season, Lee had 58 combined tackles, a forced fumble and an interception.

But, as Machota writes in his report, Lee’s contract isn’t the only deal the Cowboys are likely worrying about, and individual contracts in the NFL always bleed into a team’s full financial pie chart. If Lee can stay healthy and post the numbers many expect of him this season, though, it will only help make the decision more obvious for the Dallas front office.
