Rex Ryan: ‘I’m a better coach than I’m given credit for’

Despite his team’s recent struggles, Ryan has no doubts about his ability to coach.

USA TODAY Sports

Pressure is mounting on New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan following last year's 6-10 campaign, but Ryan said he doesn't care about outside opinions of his abilities, and offered a forceful defense of his coaching acumen in a recent interview with Newsday (NY).

“I’m a hell of a lot better football coach than I’m given credit for,” Ryan said Thursday. “I can tell you one thing, when it’s said and done, they’ll look back and say, ‘Oh man, this dude can coach his butt off.’”

Few may have disagreed with that notion after Ryan’s first two seasons in New York -- he led the Jets to the AFC title game both years, though they fell short of the Super Bowl each time. But the team missed the playoffs the next two seasons, and their 6-10 campaign last year was their worst under Ryan.

In an effort to begin reversing that negative trend, Ryan brought in Marty Mornhinweg to run the Jets’ sputtering offense. If New York can’t make improvements on that side of the ball, Ryan may not be around to define his own legacy for very long.
