D.J. Swearinger will contribute for Texans early on

D.J. Swearinger is turning heads in offseason workouts, and coach Gary Kubiak thinks he can be a major contributor in his rookie season.

USA TODAY Sports

Houston Texans safety D.J. Swearinger continues to impress his coaches and teammates at offseason workouts. With veteran free agent Ed Reed rehabbing his surgically-repaired hip, Swearinger has been taking most of the first-team reps in OTAs and minicamp.

The rookie hasn’t disappointed yet, leading head coach Gary Kubiak to hint hat he could play a big role in his first year: “He’s very smart in picking things up with what we’re doing ... We’re excited for him to be a part of our team. I think he’s going to be a big contributor early.”

The Texans drafted Swearinger with the 57th overall pick in the NFL Draft after a standout career at South Carolina. Over four years, he started 33 games. In his senior year, he recorded 79 tackles, two interceptions, nine passes defended and two forced fumbles.

With Reed’s recovery going slowly (he’s not expected to be ready for training camp), Swearinger will have even more opportunities to prove himself in July and August.
