Brian Banks accuser ordered to pay $2.6 million

The woman who falsely accused Brian Banks of rape will have to pay $2.6 million to the the school district of Long Beach Poly High School ... if anyone can find her.

The woman who falsely accused then-prep star linebacker Brian Banks of rape in 2002 has been ordered to pay $2.6 million to the school district of Long Beach Poly High School. Wanetta Gibson sued the district for poor campus security that led to her alleged rape, and received $750,000 of a $1.5 million settlement.

Banks spent five years in prison before he was exonerated. The case turned on a meeting between Gibson and Banks in 2011, during which Banks secretly recorded Gibson admitting that she fabricated the allegations. Banks’ conviction was overturned on May 24, 2012.

When Banks was accused, he had already verbally committed to USC to play football. He faced up to 41 years in prison for his alleged crimes, so he instead accepted a plea deal that included five years in prison, five years probation and registering as a sex offender.

Fortunately, Banks' story appears to have a happy ending. He was able to rejuvenate his football career by signing with the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League in 2012. Last April, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons, where he will fight for a roster spot at inside linebacker.

Meanwhile, Gibson’s whereabouts are unknown. She was not in court Friday when a judge ruled in favor of the school district.
