Heath Miller injury: Steelers TE might not be ready Week 1

Heath Miller’s extensive knee surgery may keep him out for the regular season opener.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller is still recovering from a massive knee injury, and he may not be ready for the regular season. Miller remains "out indefinitely" and there is a "strong possibility" he won't be healthy in time for Week 1, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Miller tore his ACL, MCL and PCL in late December and had reconstructive surgery in early January. Before the injury, he had been featured as a major weapon in Todd Haley’s offense, recording 71 catches for 816 yards and eight touchdowns. It was the first time since 1966 that a tight end led all Pittsburgh players in receptions.

If Miller isn't ready to go for the season, the team will likely turn to Matt Spaeth as the starter. Spaeth is an excellent blocker — Pro Football Focus graded him as the best blocking tight end in the league — but he has never caught more than 17 passes in a season. He signed a two-year, $2 million deal with the Steelers in the offseason.
