Green Bay Packers release LB Desmond Bishop

The Packers are set to part ways with their longtime inside linebacker.

Matt Ludtke

The Green Bay Packers will release inside linebacker Desmond Bishop Monday, according to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

News of the potential move first surfaced last week, as Green Bay and Bishop had been unable to work out a new contract. The veteran missed the entire 2012 season with a torn hamstring and was set to make $3.46 million in 2013 with the team. The Packers tried to seek out possible trade partners for Bishop during the NFL Draft, but no other team was willing to make a deal.

In 2011, Bishop played in 13 games and recorded 115 tackles, five sacks and five tackles for loss, while adding two forced fumbles and a pass breakup. The Packers selected him in the sixth round of the 2007 draft, and he became a starter for Green Bay in 2010. After his breakout season, the team signed him to a four-year, $19.05 million contract.

Over the course of his career, Bishop has recorded 292 tackles, nine sacks and eight tackles for loss, and he’s come up with nine pass breakups, eight forced fumbles and one interception, which was returned for a touchdown.
