49ers reportedly sign OC Greg Roman to 2-year extension

Greg Roman is a big reason why the 49ers went to the Super Bowl last season. The team rewarded him with a two-year extension.

USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have signed offensive coordinator Greg Roman to a two-year extension, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. This keeps him with the team through the 2015 season.

Roman was hired by the 49ers in 2011. He followed head coach Jim Harbaugh to the pros after coaching under him for two years at Stanford. Roman is renowned for his creative offensive schemes and the grooming of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who went from a raw Nevada prospect to one of the most promising playmakers in the league.

More 49ers coverage at Niners Nation

Roman is widely expected to take a head coaching gig in the near future, and has interviewed for several teams already. David Fucillo at Niners Nation believes that Roman will leave sooner than later:

This does not guarantee Roman will be with the 49ers through 2015. He has interviewed for head coaching jobs, and likely will continue to do so. He has indicated he would like to become a head coach, and he is not required to get permission to interview for head coaching jobs while in a coordinator position.

Harbaugh gets all the praise for turning around a franchise that was stuck in the doldrums for nearly a decade, but Roman deserves a lot of credit for his role in shaping the offense. He will be a hot coaching commodity in the next few years.
