Falcons still interested in Richard Seymour

GM Thomas Dimitroff doesn’t have anything new to say about potentially signing Richard Seymour, but he does admit that he’s still interested in the veteran.

The Atlanta Falcons remain interested in free agent defensive end Richard Seymour, general manager Thomas Dimitroff admitted to Pro Football Talk on Sunday.

Dimitroff went on PFT Live to discuss the ongoing negotiations with quarterback Matt Ryan. When asked about the team’s reported interested in Seymour, he was rather mum on the subject, but did admit to keeping an eye on the 33-year-old veteran.

”We’re very conscientious about making sure that we bring in veterans that we believe are legitimate starters and still can contribute at a substantial level ... we’re not just bringing in veteran talent that end up being cheerleaders for us at all. We’re gonna bring in guys that are substantial, for us, difference makers.

Richard is a fine football player, I know him well from his days in New England. He’s a guy right now that there’s a lot of discussion about him coming here. There’s nothing new to report on him ... again, that’s something we’ll continue to keep our eye on. We’re getting to a point where we’re wrapping up our roster here very soon ... [Seymour] is a fine football player and I still believe he can play.

Seymour spent the past four seasons with the Oakland Raiders. He was plagued by injuries in 2012, appearing in only eight games while recording three sacks. He hasn't seen much interest on the open market since hitting free agency in March.

If healthy, Seymour can still contribute to a winning team, and the Falcons are still looking for veteran help on the defensive line even after signing Osi Umeniyora. It seems like a natural fit if both parties are interested.
