Alex Mack contract: Browns expected to extend offensive lineman

The Browns are expected to extend the contract of center Alex Mack. It is unclear whether they will extend the same courtesy to the rest of their upcoming free agents, however.

The Cleveland Browns are more than $30 million under the salary cap, which may be good news for players set to become free agents after the 2013 season, in particular center Alex Mack. According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns will likely extend his contract before he becomes a free agent in 2014.

The Browns have several other players to consider for extensions as well. Offensive guard John Greco and safety T.J. Ward are also set to hit free agency in 2014, and cornerback Joe Haden is arguably the biggest name hitting free agency in 2015. However, Mack appears to be the Browns' only "sure thing," the Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto wrote last week. Cabot agreed, saying general manager Joe Banner will likely "wait and see" how other players perform before committing to large contracts.

Mack has spent all four of his seasons in the NFL with the Browns after being taken with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He graded out as the ninth-best center in the NFL last season by Pro Football Focus.
