Giants WR Brandon Collins suspended 4 games for substance abuse policy

Brandon Collins’ hopes of making the Giants’ final roster may be over after he got suspended four games for substance abuse.

USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants wide receiver Brandon Collins has been suspended four games by the NFL, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The suspension is for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Collins is an undrafted free agent in his second year in the league. He spent his college career at Southeastern Louisiana before landing with the Giants. Collins spent his rookie season on the practice squad. Even with Victor Cruz going through a contract dispute, Collins was considered a longshot to make the final roster, as he's buried behind Rueben Randle, Ramses Barden and Kris Adams on the depth chart.

Collins spent two years at Texas before transferring to Southeastern Louisiana. He was mostly a punt return specialist, returning 21 punts for 232 yards in 2011. With news of this suspension, it’s unlikely that the Giants will keep him on the final roster when the regular season begins.

Giants blog Big Blue View thinks this will ruin his chances of making the team:

Collins, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Southeastern Louisiana last May, was still trying to crack the team’s 53-man roster. This, however, may ultimately destroy his chances.

Collins was in Giants camp a season ago and spent less than a week on the team’s practice squad. He finished his collegiate career at Southeast Louisiana after being kicked off the Texas team following an arrest.
