Giants use Justin Pugh at right tackle in practice

New York is hoping to see Pugh develop in his first year as a pro on the right side.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants have been playing their 2013 first-round pick, Justin Pugh, at the right tackle position in minicamp, according to NJ.com.

One of the reasons general manager Jerry Reese selected the Syracuse offensive tackle was because of his versatility. With Will Beatty anchoring the left tackle spot, Pugh is in a fight with veteran David Diehl for the right side's premier spot.

Should Pugh lose the initial battle with Diehl, he would become a swing tackle to begin his career. The former Orange standout played on the left side in college, so he’s an ideal candidate to back up either position as the third tackle.

As pointed out by SB Nation’s blog Big Blue View, Pugh could potentially play inside on the line as well, showcasing a rare blend of size and strength.

Giants Director of College Scouting Marc Ross had this to say about Pugh:

"I think he has the skill set to play anywhere along the line, and whatever our coaches feel is the biggest need to put him at next year, I think he can do that -- from left tackle to center to right tackle to guard, he really has . . . because he's so smart, so technique-sound and so athletic, it's definitely a positive to be able to do that," Ross said. "In a year who knows what our needs will be."

Head coach Tom Coughlin will have plenty of options along his front wall with two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning hoping to enjoy solid protection.
