Peyton Manning says Broncos will use routes Wes Welker ran with Patriots

Welker is coping with new surroundings for the first time in more than half a decade, but he does have some familiar old patterns to help him get acclimated.

USA TODAY Sports

Wide receiver Wes Welker is still adjusting to his new surroundings, but Peyton Manning and the Broncos are doing what they can to make the transition to a different system as smooth as possible. Manning began working out with Welker at Duke University in April, and they've continued to work through the offense during minicamp.

Additionally, Denver looked at the routes Welker ran for the Patriots and some of them will be incorporated into the Broncos' attack this season, according to DenverBroncos.com's Gray Caldwell:

“I’d be lying if I told you we have not studied what worked well for Wes in New England,” Manning said. “There’s certain pass patterns and certain things that he’s done so well for so long, you’d be crazy not to copy some of those and bring those to your offense.”

Everything from the extra reps in the spring to some familiar pass patterns should help Welker translate his impressive production to Denver. He spent six seasons with New England, and he caught at least 110 passes in five of those campaigns, eclipsing the 1,000-yard receiving mark in each case.

The 32-year-old hasn’t shown many signs recently of slowing down with age -- he had a career-high 1,569 yards receiving in 2011, and he followed that up with 1,354 yards last season.
