San Francisco 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore won't participate in the team's training camp, according to Lattimore on the NFL Network's NFL Total Access program. Lattimore said that he did a lot during organized team activities, but that he "probably won't do training camp."
Marcus Lattimore injury: 49ers rookie won’t participate in training camp
San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Marcus Lattimore says he probably won’t participate in team training camp in late July.
Lattimore went on to say that he’d like to get a chance to practice “mid-season.” The 49ers open training camp in late July, and though all signs point to Lattimore’s recovery going well to this point, the knee injuries he sustained in college were very serious. After all, Lattimore was considered a possible first overall pick prior to those injuries.
It’s likely that Lattimore will be added to the Non-Football Injury list. Lattimore’s college injury doesn’t count as a “football injury” at the NFL level. If he goes to that list, he will have to sit out the first six weeks of the season. It’s still up for debate as to whether or not Lattimore will get any playing time at all this season, but it seems likely he’d come back to practice with the team.
San Francisco likely considered Lattimore the future feature running back for their offense, provided he can make a full recovery. Frank Gore is that guy right now, and there are two other young guns behind him in Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James, but neither of those running backs seem capable of providing the production that Gore does. Lattimore might.
