Mike Williams released by Toronto Argonauts

Mike Williams is yet again without a job in football, after being released by the Toronto Argonauts just eight days after signing with the team.

Just over two years removed from a resurgent 2010 season, Mike Williams is once again out of football after being released by the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. Williams has followed one of the more intriguing career paths one can take as a former first-round pick.

Williams was drafted No. 10 overall by the Detroit Lions during the 2005 NFL Draft despite sitting out his junior season at USC after being declared ineligible by the NCAA. He quickly flamed out, catching just 37 passes for Detroit in two seasons before being traded to the Oakland Raiders on the first day of the 2007 NFL Draft. Williams caught seven passes in six games for the Raiders before being traded to Tennessee, where he finished the season without making another reception. He was released during training camp 2008, and wasn't heard from for two years.

Williams got a second chance in the NFL when his former USC head coach Pete Carroll took over the Seattle Seahawks. Williams had a fantastic comeback season, catching 65 passes for 751 yards and two touchdowns to help the Seahawks to a surprise playoff run. His numbers fell in 2011 (18 receptions, 236 yards), however, and he was released before the 2012 season due in part to a leg injury.

Williams sat out the year, then signed with the Argonauts just last week. He only lasted eight days in Canada, however. The teams did not give specific reasons for Williams’ release. If the release was performance related, he will be hard-pressed to get another shot in the NFL at this stage of his career.
