Former Seahawks QB Josh Portis signs with Toronto Argonauts

Josh Portis is headed to the CFL after being released by the Seahawks in May.

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Josh Portis' football career has included a number of stops and the next one is apparently set for Canada. Portis, a former Seattle backup quarterback, signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, according to a report from Adam Caplan of The Sideline View.

Portis' departure to the CFL comes a few weeks after he was released by the Seahawks following an arrest for suspected DUI. Portis was pulled over on May 5 and reportedly tested with a blood alcohol level of .092, above the Washington legal-limit of .08. He was arrested on May 20 and waived by the Seahawks on May 21.

His move to the CFL is just the latest stop in Portis' football career. He began his college football career at Florida, but eventually transferred to Maryland before finishing his career at Division II California University of Pennsylvania. He signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and made the active roster. Seattle elected to keep only two quarterbacks last season, and Portis spent much of the year on the practice squad before being released in November. He re-signed with Seattle in April and was expected to compete for the backup job behind Russell Wilson before being released following his arrest.

According to Danny Kelly of Field Gulls, Portis drew praise for his performance in offseason workouts. He will now attempt to continue that strong play in the CFL. He joins an Argonauts roster which already has four quarterbacks, including 2012 starter Ricky Ray.

This is the second time Portis has signed with Toronto this offseason. He signed a deal with the Argonauts in March before re-signing with Seattle in April.
