The Chicago Bears will host former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell for a workout on Friday as the former Raiders quarterback continues his comeback attempt, according to a report from Michael C. Wright of ESPN Chicago.
JaMarcus Russell will tryout with Chicago
Russell’s comeback attempt continues and the former No. 1 pick will workout for the Chicago Bears.

Russell has not played in the NFL since 2009, and while his weight reportedly ballooned to well over 300 pounds, Russell has lost upwards of 50 pounds over the past few months and is now reportedly the same weight he was coming into the NFL. According to Wright’s report, the Bears showed mild interest in Russell earlier in his comeback attempt, but were not planning to show further interest until Russell got his weight under control.
Now that Russell is in better shape, he will get an opportunity to prove he still has the skills that made him the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Russell will be one of four quarterbacks working out for Chicago on Friday.
NFL teams host players for workouts routinely with only a select few getting signed. Russell still has a ways to go in his comeback attempt, but the workout with Chicago is a positive step. The Bears currently have Jay Cutler, Josh McCown and Matt Blanchard on the quarterback depth chart and, according to Wright, Chicago isn't looking to add another quarterback. Russell could change their minds with a strong workout, but at the very minimum he has worked his way back onto the NFL radar.
