Ravens rumors: Daryl Smith draws Baltimore’s interest

The defending champs are thinking about bringing in a quality asset on defense.

The Baltimore Ravens are considering signing former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker and current free agent Daryl Smith, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Smith could certainly qualify as a low-risk, high-reward signing, considering it won’t take much financially to bring him on board after he played in only two games last season due to a groin injury. However, Smith was one of the better inside linebackers before 2012 while playing in obscurity.

In nine NFL seasons, Smith has proven to be a very good all-around player. The former Georgia Tech standout has shown the ability to cover in space and also stuff the run between the tackles. Only two seasons ago, Smith registered 107 tackles and eight passes deflected.

Smith, 31, is the all-time leader in tackles for Jacksonville. In his career, Smith has 21.5 sacks and six interceptions to accompany his 679 tackles, including two seasons of 100-plus.

For the Ravens, the move would make a ton of sense. With Ray Lewis retired, Smith would be able to come into camp and compete with second-round draft pick Arthur Brown out of Kansas State. If Brown wins the job, Smith is excellent depth and a very good mentor. If Smith wins it, Brown has time for seasoning.

No other team is known to be showing interest in Smith right now. The St. Louis Rams did bring Smith in for a visit a while ago, but nothing came of it.
