Former Alabama quarterback and current Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks coach Freddie Kitchens is in recovery Wednesday, after unexpectedly winding up on an operating table on Tuesday. Kitchens began to feel "dizzy" and "lightheaded" during Tuesday's practice and was taken to the Cardinals training room, where it was determined that he should be taken to a hospital for further examination.

The Cardinals got a shock Tuesday when one of their own started to feel woozy and was taken to the hospital. Hours later, Freddie Kitchens was having heart surgery.

A CT scan revealed a defect in Kitchens' aorta that required heart surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute on Tuesday night. The surgery went "very well" according to the team and the progress is positive.
Kitchens was with the Alabama Crimson Tide from 1993-97, throwing for 30 touchdowns and 26 interceptions during his career. He got his first NFL job as the Dallas Cowboys' tight ends coach in 2006, and he accepted the same job with the Arizona Cardinals the following year. After the team hired Bruce Arians, Kitchens' offensive coordinator at Alabama in 1997, Kitchens was retained and moved to quarterbacks coach for this season.
Assistant head coach Tom Moore will take over Kitchens’ duties in the meantime.
