Ben Roethlisberger injury: Steelers QB has minor surgery

The veteran quarterback was feeling slight discomfort in his knee, but Mike Tomlin says it is nothing to worry about. Will Ben Roethlisberger be back in time for training camp?

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had minor surgery on his right knee, according to head coach Mike Tomlin, by way of the team's official Twitter account. Roethlisberger was having "slight discomfort" in his knee over the offseason, and Tomlin advised him to get the surgery done now so that he may be ready for the start of training camp.

The 31-year-old veteran of nine NFL seasons has only started 16 games during a campaign once in his career. A rib injury forced him out of three games in 2012, when he completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 3,265 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions for Pittsburgh.

Tomlin added that this current injury and surgery should not have any long-term effects on Roethlisberger’s health, and it appears that the QB will be back in time for training camp.
