Stephen Hill injury: Jets WR sits out practice

The second-year receiver thought he was fully recovered from offseason knee surgery, but the medical staff saw something it didn’t like and put him on hold. When will Stephen Hill return?

Jim O’Connor-US PRESSWIRE

New York Jets wide receiver Stephen Hill had resumed practicing with the team following offseason knee surgery, but team doctors have sidelined Hill again after swelling and additional fluid was discovered in the knee this week:

“I was (expected to be cleared by now),” Hill said. “I was going through some team workouts. At first it kind of swelled up on me a little bit and (trainer John Melody) was like, ‘we don’t need this to happen at all.’”

Hill, the 43rd-overall pick out of Georgia Tech in 2012, was placed on injured reserve last December after suffering a sprained LCL. He played in 11 games as a rookie, catching 21 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Hill opened the season with 89 yards and two touchdowns against the Buffalo Bills in his NFL debut, but he was slowed down by injury and inconsistency, as well as the Jets' struggles at the quarterback position.

He is a likely favorite to start opposite of Santonio Holmes this season. Hill expects to return for next week's mandatory Jets minicamp.
