Santonio Holmes injury: Jets WR could miss part of training camp

Amid news that receiver Stephen Hill has suffered a small setback with his knee, Rex Ryan states that Holmes could start training camp on the PUP list.

Santonio Holmes played in just four games last season before being placed on injured reserve due to a Lisfranc foot injury, but that might not be the end of the string of games missed by the Jets receiver. Head coach Rex Ryan stated on Wednesday that it was a "possibility" that Holmes could start training camp on the preseason Physically-Unable-to-Perform list according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Unlike the regular season PUP list, that would not force Holmes to miss the first six games of the season, this just allows the team to give his roster spot to another player during training camp. But it should keep out the veteran receiver for a significant portion of the rest of the offseason.

Holmes has managed to stay relatively healthy throughout his professional career, having never missed more than four games in any of his first six years in the league. He totaled 20 catches for 272 yards and one touchdown last year as the Jets and quarterback Mark Sanchez struggled to move the ball on offense, finishing 30th in the NFL in passing yards. Jeremy Kerley took over as the primary receiver, finishing with 56 catches for 827 yards and two touchdowns in 2012.

Second-year receiver Stephen Hill was shut down this week from practice following swelling in his knee, likely due to offseason surgery, but is expected back for mandatory minicamps next week. It does not look like Holmes will be joining him then, and could be out even longer than that.
