Patriots not expected to turn to Brandon Lloyd after Aaron Hernandez release

Tom Brady could be throwing to all new faces to start the season, now that Aaron Hernandez is gone. Are the Patriots willing to bring back Brandon Lloyd?

Scott Heavey

The New England Patriots aren't likely to look to Brandon Lloyd as they try to move forward from Aaron Hernandez, according to Field Yates of ESPN Boston.

The wideout was released by the team last March after just one season. While he was productive with the Patriots and Tom Brady needs a new set of targets, Yates says recent drama between the player and team will likely prohibit a reunion.

Lloyd was signed to a three-year contract in 2012, and had two years remaining when he was released. He was due a healthy salary along with a $3 million roster bonus, and the Patriots decided to do what was in their best interests financially. However, Lloyd is coming off the second most productive year of his career with 74 receptions for 911 yards and four touchdowns last season.

Yates suggests that reasons other than finances may have played a role in Lloyd’s release. The Patriots are a locker room-conscious organization, and Lloyd may not have been the best fit with the rest of the team. If the organization has lingering beef with the wideout, it may rather let him languish in free agency.
