Branden Albert contract: Chiefs to begin negotiations on new deal

The deadline for franchise players to sign is looming, but Branden Albert and the Chiefs are still working on a possible long-term deal.

USA TODAY Sports

There haven't been many reports on the contract negotiations between Branden Albert and the Chiefs recently, but that should change over the next two weeks. The deadline for franchised players to sign an extension is July 15 and the two sides are expected to resume negotiations next week, according to Bill Williamson of ESPN.com.

It's been an eventful offseason for Albert, who was franchised by the Chiefs but spent most of the offseason on the trade block. At one point he appeared to be on his way to Miami, but the Dolphins and Chiefs were unable to work out a deal. The Chiefs drafted Eric Fisher with the No. 1 pick, but appear interested in retaining Albert long-term and playing Fisher at right tackle.

If that is going to happen, the two sides will have to have a deal by July 15. If no deal is struck by then, Albert would play the season on the franchise tender before becoming an unrestricted free agent next season. Kansas City could sign Albert to a long-term deal next offseason before the start of free agency or place the franchise tag on him again.
