NFL will determine Josh Brent’s status before training camp starts, per report

Dallas starts training camp in a week, and it should know by then whether Brent will play in 2013.

US PRESSWIRE

The NFL is expected to determine the playing status of Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent before the team travels to begin its training camp next week, a league spokesman told ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer on Thursday.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has the power to suspend Brent under the league’s personal conduct policy before legal proceedings conclude, Archer said.

Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter after a car accident that killed Cowboys practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown in December. Brent spent 11 days in jail recently after violating terms of his pretrial release and allegedly testing positive for marijuana twice. A monitoring system device alerted officials to alcohol in his system in March, in addition to the two failed drug tests.

Brent is currently eligible to participate in team practices but did not participate in any organized offseason team activities, Archer said. The team is preparing as if Brent will not play in 2013, Archer said.

Brent had 22 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and one forced fumble in 2012.
