Cowboys release Lawrence Vickers

Dallas opened up a roster spot and cap space with the move to jettison Vickers.

Jim O’Connor-US PRESSWIRE

The Dallas Cowboys cut their only fullback, Lawrence Vickers, on Friday, according to the team's official website.

Vickers had only played one season for the Cowboys and had started six games while playing in all 16. It was somewhat of a surprise decision with camp coming fast, but the motive is obvious.

By cutting Vickers, Dallas saves $1.2 million in cap space and opens up another roster spot for a cheaper player to come in and compete. The release also signals a change within the Cowboys’ offense, with the team looking to go without a traditional fullback and use the H-back as a lead blocker.

Vickers has been in the NFL for seven seasons, enjoying his first five with the Cleveland Browns before joining the Houston Texans and Cowboys for one year each.

Statistically, Vickers’ best campaign was 2007, when he accounted for 134 all-purpose yards.
