Branden Albert, Chiefs talking contract extension

The Chiefs are once again talking to Branden Albert about an extension. They have until Monday to get a long-term deal done with the franchise player.

USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs and offensive tackle Branden Albert are talking about a contract extension, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer. No formal offer has been made yet, although Breer said it's possible one is coming soon.

The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Albert in the spring. They attempted to trade him before the NFL Draft, but negotiations with the Miami Dolphins broke down at the last minute. Albert signed his tender and will attend training camp, but he's still seeking a new deal.

The two sides have until Monday to sign a long-term deal; otherwise Albert will have to play the 2013 season on his one-year contract. He's currently slated to make $9.8 million under the franchise tag. Breer noted the deal may hinge on how much the Denver Broncos pay Ryan Clady. Clady is also a franchised player, but is expected to sign a new deal before the Monday deadline.

Albert will play for the Chiefs in 2013, but where he goes after that is unclear. The Chiefs drafted Eric Fisher with the No. 1 pick and will play him at right tackle as a rookie, but he can easily slide over to the left side if Albert departs in the offseason.
