Calais Campbell happy Cardinals finally have a ‘real quarterback’

Calais Campbell said the Cardinals can win the NFC West now that they have a real quarterback lining up under center.

USA TODAY Sports

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell is bullish on his team's chances this season. Campbell told Mike Freeman of CBS Sports the Cardinals can win the NFC West, thanks to finally having a "real quarterback" running the offense.

The Cardinals traded for Carson Palmer after last year's merry-go-round, in which they started four QBs, each one as bad as the last. Campbell believes that alone will make all the difference for Arizona. From CBS Sports:

“I think it’s very likely we can win the division, yes,” Campbell said. “I respect every opponent in our division. Every one. But I think of it this way. We were able to hang in a bunch of our division games without a real quarterback.

“I don’t want to disrespect anyone but now we have a real quarterback to go with a good defense. When we play with a lead, we’re hard to beat. This is the first time in years that we have an offense that matches our defense.”

Arizona's quarterback position has been in flux since Kurt Warner retired following the 2009 season. At 33, Palmer isn't a long-term solution for the Cardinals, but he does give the offense a measure of stability it hasn't had since Warner.

Campbell is probably a little over-optimistic about the Cardinals' playoff chances. They're still in the NFC West, where the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers are Super Bowl contenders and the St. Louis Rams are popular wild card picks. But, after witnessing last year's horror show at quarterback, can you really blame him?
