Justin Pugh in mix for Giants starting RT job

Justin Pugh will compete with James Brewer and David Diehl for the Giants’ starting right tackle spot, according to offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.

USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants first-round pick Justin Pugh will compete with David Diehl and James Brewer for the team's starting right tackle spot, according to ESPN New York. In an interview, offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride emphasized the need for youth at the position.

“We added some young blood that can come in and look like they have the skill set to be able to play and contribute down the road,” Gilbride said. “There is no question, we needed an infusion of talent at that spot -– young talent that would be able to come in and eventually assume starting roles. How soon that will be remains to be seen.”

Pugh was selected by the Giants with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He can play either tackle or guard, but right tackle is considered the weakest spot along the line. Diehl, last year's starter, graded out as the worst blocker along the line according to Pro Football Focus.

The Giants’ offensive line averaged a respectable 4.6 yards per carry, and the team gave up a league-low 20 sacks during the regular season. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement, however. If Diehl loses his starting spot, the 32-year-old should still provide depth at potentially every position up front except for center, according to Giants blog Big Blue View.
